Imagery Paragraphs Assignment!

Lately in my creative writing class we have been talking about imagery in text and how it paints a perfect image in our heads as well as how it can make all our senses not just visuals come alive! The assignment we had to do was take a paragraph from a book and analyze the paragraph and highlight the types of imagery in that paragraph, than answer 6 follow up questions!

For my paragraph I chose to do a paragraph from

 "The Notebook" 

By Nicholas Spark

My paragraph was on Pg.103

And the three types of imagery I found were:

1) Auditory 

2) Visual, and

3) Kinaesthetic

Q) Why did you select this particular passage? Why did it appeal to you?

A) I chose this particular passage as it gives an amazing visual that let's you picture exactly what the words are saying. I also like how it shows how calm Noah makes Allie feel.

Q) What type of imagery is most common in the passage?

A) I would say that visual imagery is the most present type of imagery in this passage.

Q) What is the best snippet of imagery within this passage? Why is it so effective?

A) "The paddle moved rhythmically, causing baffles that rocked the boat ever so slightly." Is the best snippet of visual imagery in this passage. I feel that this passage is effective as it uses very descriptive words that gives you a perfect visual of the boat moving through the water.

Q) Is the imagery positive or negative? How do you know this? Give some words words as examples to support your answer.

A) I would have to say it is a positive imagery as it is talking about a calm lake that the boat was moving across. It shows the river was calm by saying "rocked the boat ever so slightly." The motion of the paddles were causing the boat to rock not the lake. So this means the lake was calm. 

Q) What mood/emotion is being created by the author in this passage? How do you know? 

A) A calm/relaxed mood is trying to be placed on this passage. You see this as it is talking about how calm Allie feels when Noah is around. I know this as it says Allie is forgetting about the the anxiety and all the tension she had before and how happy and calm she is with Noah now.

Q) What is the purpose of this piece of imagery?

A) The purpose of this piece of imagery is to show the calmness in both the scenery and Allie. As well as to show Noah is the one that makes her feel calm.

Log Book Project!

For a month my creative writing class had to keep a log book of our days! We could either write the day out in a quick short form or we could do little drawings! I chose to do little stick drawings for my log book! Here are two days that really stuck out to me during that month! 

Nov.10th/2013: On this day I had my normal marksmanship Sunday practise. Later in the day I got dressed up to meet my girl friends at Moxies to have Girls night with all the girls in my group of friends! Than we all went out to one of the girls houses and had a sleepover and talked! It was a really fun night! 

Nov.13th/2013: On this day I started off with having a regular school day! Later that night I went to the Grant Park McNally Robinson to meet Commander Chris Hadfield! He's such an inspiration to me! The two hour wait in line was worth it! 

Thinking About Dialouge

1)      Talk about the process of eavesdropping.

a)      Where did you go?

I started off in the cafeteria, than I walked around the school. Finally I finished off in two different classrooms that were having free time. Both classrooms are where I got the best results for my conversations as the students were staying stationary and not moving.

 

b)     How long did you listen to each conversation?

I didn’t listen to the conversations for very long at all. This was because I didn’t want to be too obvious that I was listening, as well as it was hard because a lot of people were walking and talking and following people walking and talking is hard to keep track of. The conversations in the classrooms like I said were a lot easier to record as the students were staying stationary and not moving. Also in one of the classes I was able to go around the corner and listen to the conversation. That conversations was the longest one I listened to which was around 3 minutes.

 

c)      Who was it between

All my conversations I listened to were between students.

 

d)     How did it feel to be recording the conversations?

It felt kind of weird to be recording the conversations. I guess because it is such a normal thing to listen to other people’s conversations as you are walking by or waiting for something. I think what felt weird about it was that you really had to listen and actually take note on what people were saying, This was a little weird as some of the conversations could have been personal.

 

2)      What insights did you gain about the way people speak?

I think that if people are talking about subjects that they are passionate about, they will talk in a more excited tone. This could mean they start talking louder and faster and usually have a happy face, or an upset face depending if someone is talking down on their passion.

 

3)      How can you apply this to your writing?

I can apply this to my writing by communicating conversations in a more descriptive way, especially if the conversations are supposed to be expressed enthusiastically. I can also add more body language into my writing.

 

 

4)      How is personality and character revealed through conversation/dialogue?

Personality is shown in a number of ways including the tone of their voice, as well as their body language. If the person is shy, usually they will talk quieter, as well as go closer to the people they are talking to. Louder people may be a little more confident to talk in front of a group of people.

 

 

5)      What happens when more than two people participate in a conversation?

When more than two people take part in conversations there are a lot of people talking over each other. This is especially present when the people are enthusiastic over the topics and have a lot of opinions on them.

 

6)      What was the most surprising thing you’ve learned about the way people converse?

I feel that nothing was too surprising, but just having to noticing the body language and people’s passions. It was interesting to see how people’s tones and body language switched when they were talking about something they were passionate about.

 

7)      What are the differences and similarities between written and spoken conversations?

With spoken conversations you are able to hear the tone and see the body language which can help show how the person is feeling. Even though authors can describe in their own words the tones and body language of the characters, hearing it and seeing it can make the feeling become clearer. A similarity would be that the message stays the same with both.

Imagery Quickwrites: Chocolate Chip Cookies

As I close my door (BANG), just getting home from a busy/stressful day at school, I start to smell something all to familiar and great. A sweet, and creamy smell. A smell that makes me feel comfortable and happy and warm inside as soon as I sniff it. My mouth starts salivating.

 While walking to my kitchen in a faster pace with a huge smile on my face, and cheeks still cold from the bitterness of the winters day, I hear the clang of the oven door closing. As I step through my kitchen I see a big silver cooling rack with a dozen cookies on top. My favourite food! The sight was just so beautiful, The golden brown thin flat cookie, with huge chunks of creamy milk choclate. You can tell they just came out of the oven because the steam was coming right off of them.

As my mom hands me a cup of warm hot chocolate she says in a very sympathetic voice,

"Hi honey, how was the rest of your day."

she  knew how stressed out and upset I was all day because I had been texting her for the majority of the day. I replied to her by saying

" (sigh) It was alright, still very stressful, but those cookies are starting to make it better" ending off with a smile.
 
"I thought I would surprise you by making your favourite snack, just wait a few more minutes because they are still hot! Another batch are in oven right now!"

I take a sip of the hot chocolate, it tastes so yummy. The temperture is just right not to hot not to cold, it warms my throat as it travels down to my stomach. I can tell by the creamy-ness that she put a little milk in it to cool it down, just how I like.

As I take my cup of hot chocolate and sit down on the soft cushion on the chair at my kitchen table my mom hands me over a plate with some cookies.

I tell her that the Hot choclate is fantastic.

"I made it a little bit earlier because I know you don't like it too hot" She replies with a huge smile on her face! She loves making people feel better, and I  can tell that she is happy that
 I am starting to feel a little better.

The cookie is warm when I pick it up. As I take a bite of it, I instantly feel joy spread across my whole body! Nice, soft, and very moist! I lick the little string of melting chocolate that was left on my lip off. Nothing makes me happier than my mothers cookies, she makes them absolutly amazing. So balanced with just enough sweet-ness and just enough chocolate chips.

shes asks "How are the cookies?"

I look at her with big eyes and a huge smile and say in a very enthusiastic voice "Amazing, thank you for everything mom, I love you."

"I love you too" She replies in a very loving, calm motherly voice.

"I love you too"

Santa Claus Parade

This year marked the 3rd year that I was in the Santa Claus Parade! I was on the Winnipeg Airport Authorities float with my Air Cadet Squadron and another Air Cadet Squadron! My squadron was on the float as the WAA sponsors my squadron! I always find doing the parade a lot of fun as everyone is so cheerful!

I really enjoyed the book! It brought lots of tears to my eyes. I feel like both the book and movie are great and they both show such an amazing love story! I can't wait to read more Nicholas Sparks books!

Quick Writes #5- Plane Ticket

If I had an unlimited plane ticket, I would literally not stop travelling for the whole month. I would go and experience the world. I would spend a short time in each place I visited, because after that month I could decide if I wanted to go back there another time. I think it would be an experience of a life time. Yes you would be exhausted but it would be so worth it!  Some of the places I would travel would be Europe, especially Great Britain, Paris, France, and the War memorials. California, New York, Travel Across Canada, Hawaii, Bora, Bora and other tropical places, and Australia. I actually wish so much that I could have this, I would not wate a minute of it!

Quick Writes #4- Rock Star vs. Pop Star

I feel that the difference between dressing like a pop star and dressing like a rock star are really based on the flashy-ness of the outfit. I feel like rock stars really take that second word to heart (Star) and try and dress really flashy, What I mean by that is they will have the leather jackets on, and have the shirt that has something that will stand out like a cool design. I feel that their look will be more mature because rock stars are usually a little bit older. It seems like a lot of rock stars will go for the edgy yet expensive look. I feel that pop stars on the other hand go for more of the "Whats Hot in Fashion" look. They tend to where name brand running shoes while either rocking a leather jacket with a plan tee or just a plain hoodie. They like to look fresh but not overly dressed up. Sometimes they like to stick out and where very loud clothes. Pop stars like to where very "in" things because they like to be fashion icons, because there fans are usually younger and look up to them for style ideas.

Quick Writes #3- Minions

If I had a group of Minions for a week I would become completely lazy to be honest. I would literally get the Minions to do everything for me. They would make my lunches, do my chores, drive me to school, go and get things for me, they would be my entertainment, and they would do my homework, but I would definitely proof read it after. I wouldn't want tons and tons of Minions, maybe like 5. I feel 5 is a manageable number, more would be to many and they could get a little crazy! I would come up with little pet names for them and we could all be best friends! The only thing is when my time with them is over, I would be insanely sad after!

Cutting bagels :(

I cut my fingers twice this week while cutting bagels :( maybe the world is trying to tell me I eat to many bagels! :p

Sunshine Country- Blackout Poems

We did a project called "Black Out Poetry" and it is when we take a newspaper and chose words to make a poem and black out the rest of the writing. Out of the three that I did this one titled "Sunshine Country" is my favourite! It is based on the city of Los Angeles. Because it is small, I will post the stanzas:

Sunshine Country,

"Sunshine Country women with beauty style and a face to die for."

I think the reason why it is my favourite is because I like how the words flow!

Favourite Foods- Bagel w/ Cream Cheese & Choc. Milk

I LOVE bagels and cream cheese! It's just sooo good! I always get the bakery bagels from SuperStore and they are always fantastic! I also find that chocolate milk goes with a bagel and cream cheese very nicely!
